What is the Role and Effectiveness of Standardized Testing in America's Schools?

I. Describe Problem or Issue

The role of standardized testing in American education has evolved in that it has become an increasing determining factor of a student's performance and achievement. These standardized assessments, however, are debated among students, parents, and teachers as to their effectiveness in determining student potential to continue in their education. Throughout report, we examine the opinions of students, teachers, and parents as to the role of standardized testing and its effectiveness, while exploring alternative methods of assessment in effectively promoting student achievement.




II. Research Summary

Our research focuses on different aspects of standardized testing and its role in American education today. Bailey's background information examines the different opinions and perspectives of teachers, students, and parents in regards to standardized testing and its effectiveness in evaluating student performance. Katie's research focuses on different levels of student performance on these tests based on students' personal background, socioeconomic status, and general demographics. Finally, Tanya's research examines other methods of assessment that can be considered alternatives to standardized testing that may be more a more effective indicator of student performance and be a better indicator of student achievement.
